Get Your Copy of Colours EP "Skin & Bones"

Yo! Yo! Guess who's back.  I know that I'm a slacker, and that I've been M.I.A. for some time, but hey...life is complicated and I have an amazing full-time gig working for this incredible Church. That's another conversation for another time, but in the event that you're interested, check out www.pbcc.cc for some info and come hang out if you're in the Palm Beach Gardens area.
Okay enough about me and let's talk about a new band that I discovered a week ago.  I was chilling with some homies in a meeting and this kat, Alex came up to me and asked, "Hey man have you ever heard of a band named Colours?"  I looked with complete confusion, and yet total interest and amazement.  Without a thought he snatched my iPhone and found their video on YouTube.

Now I'm not one to get too giddy about bands, but when I heard these guys, I was like on cloud nine.  There was something about their sound that just grabbed me.  You can tell that there is a strong influence of Kings Of Leon, and many other strong adult alternative elements that make Colours a real refreshing and fun new discovery.

These Florida boys are on the cusp of hitting it big and now is your chance to show your support and get these guys moving forward.  Colours released their EP, Skin & Bones today which can be purchased on iTunes.  If you are looking for something that will just really get you inspired, moved, and fired up, all wrapped up like a "Taco Bell" fiesta crunch burrito, (I mean a burrito with spicy Fritos is both brilliant and toxic at the same time, but man is it good) then you need this EP.  If my killer burrito metaphor isn't enough for you then maybe their video for their song, "Machine" will do the trick.  Sorry for the Spanish subtitles, but hey, just listen and you will see how cool it is any way. Gracias!

Follow Colours on Facebook at www.facebook.com/coloursfl to keep track of the boys progress. Thanks for reading and I promise,
I'll do more writing from time to time.  I mean it this time.

"Idol" vs. "The Voice" You Decide

Well kids it's about that time to start airing those uber cool talent shows that give people instant stardom. If you said "Star Search" you need to crawl back into your time capsule and lock yourself back in until 2112 (Uh...that was a pretty cool Rush reference I must say).

What I am talking about is the next seasons of the newly rivaled vocal competition shows, created by none other than Mr. Simon Cowel himself, "The Voice" and "American Idol". Okay so I failed to mention the other one who recently thought it was a good idea to enlist the trash talking Disc-Jockey Howard Stern, "America's Got Talent." You may be asking yourself why I left off AGT? Well I don't think a show comprised of advanced baboons making fools of themselves is that remarkable. Besides, Great Brittan discovered Susan Boyle and we have...Well I can't really recall our AGT super star, so what does that tell you?

So that being said, there is a lot of interesting stuff brewing between the top two talent shows (The Voice and Idol) that have made some headlines in the last couple of weeks. Some of the friendly rivalry started last year when "Idol's" veteran judge, Randy Jackson made remarks about how The Voice was the second chance stop for failed artists (Retrieved from http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/22/american-idol-the-voice-feud_n_1294084.html on August 3, 2012). That comment set "Voice" judge Adam Levine off on a verbal slap back that sparked the match for a fun little feud. As the words continued to fly, the networks have capitalized on the fun "smack talking" and have done a great job in marketing the shows as competing for the number one slot.

The voice retains their judging panel, as questions continue to surface as to, which celebrity artists will accompany long standing judge, Randy Jackson for season twelve of Idol. The heated competition for ratings dominence may help with either two programs chance of obtaining the title of "Greatest Talent Competition in the 21st Century." Only time will tell.  Some people question the impact and power of "Idol"-now entering it's 12th season- competing with the fresher more dramatic "Voice." "Idol" has blessed the musical world with artists such as, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery, and the most recent Mumford and Sons wanna be, Phillip Philips who won last season.  Phillips single "Home" has been the theme song for the 34th Olympics, brining him some needed royalty cheddar.  Adam Lambert was up there too, but his whole boy kissing fiasco on the AMA's didn't sit right with viewers and network CEO's so, he's kind of having to work a little harder. Oh, and before I get a bunch if haters, I really like Phillip Phillips song, so don't kill me on my last comment about his single.

Anyhow, "The Voice" season three is scheduled to hit NBC September 10th. "Idol" will be ushering in the new year airing all the funny audition footage beginning in January 2013. No matter which one you choose, both shows offer driven people to reach their goals and live out their passions and dreams. Personally, I'm a fan of The Voice and I also really enjoy the quality time with my beautiful, amazing, smart, incredible...okay sorry I was having a moment there.  Where was I...oh yeah...with my girlfriend watching Idol and reminding me how Adam Lambert's devastating cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" was original and inspiring.

Summer Album Jam Suggestions

What have been some of the albums that have really hit home this summer. Well let's take a look shall we?

The first little number the really tickles my fancy has to be the boys of Linkin Park. I mean there isn't a band that continually evolves with their music audience as they do. The bands latest album "Living Things" does a real good job of combining killer rock groove with some fun dub step break beat loops that keeps you wanting more. Chester's continual emotional lyrics are sure to capture the bands loyal fans, as well as, pick up a few newbies that are looking for something hard hitting that you can twirl around some glow sticks too.

One my favorite tracks on the album  has to be "Burn It Down." There is a sense of serenity that captures your ear and mood, and before you know it, you are hit with some emotional words that are fierce and intentional about redefining self. "Living Things" in my opinion is one of the coolest albums of the summer. You need to grab yourself a copy.

Another little gem that I have stumbled upon was Ellie Goulding's album "Lights." Now I know that it came out a little bit before the summer, but the title track is really catchy and I had the pleasure of seeing some friends of mine perform a pretty awesome cover of the tune. Not only that, but she is a cute British girl with one side of her head shaved, making her a little punkish.

I really like Goulding's album. It has a lot of the typical Euro synth pads that make you say, "Hmmm...I think I will have another spot of tea." "Lights" is refreshing and very whimsical making it a feel good set of jams for parties, yoga, cooking...you name it. I really think that listeners will enjoy this record. So, "BUY IT!"

Well these are the only two albums that I have found this summer that in my opinion deserve a little attention.  If you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to let me know about them. Feel free to comment all you like. I will ask however that your comments be kind, mature, free from profanity, and kind of funny.

Thanks for your support and I look forward to hitting you with some additional cool jam suggestions next week.

Hey "Mr. Roboto" ain't Sailing Away!

Greetings and welcome back to another exciting adventure...
...Okay so let's face it...I've been sitting on my duff wasting time and wound up MIA (uh that's Missing in Action for you special folks out there reading). So this morning I got this itch to bring back "The DWN Beat" and wanted to let you all know that I'm back in the game and ready to go full swing.

A couple of things to consider is that this time around, I will be a bit more poised and organized with my posts.  I will be looking at providing a post to all of my anxious readers twice a week focusing on topics that make my heart sing...MUSIC!  Now since I've been gone, there have been some significant developments and maturation on my musical tastes. I have become an full member of the Justin Beiber fan club and I've seen the Katy Perry movie six times and started wearing sparkley T-shirts...
...Yeah right and "MONKEYS JUST FLEW OUT OF MY BUTT FOLKS! Are you kidding me?! If that was true I would call for all my reader pals to come and give me a cyber Karate-Chop in the junk to help me snap out of it. All kidding aside, I do want to say that any artist that is out there doing what they are passionate about, whether it's Bieber or Katy, have earned it and I support them no matter what people may say or think. They are great in their own special way and they are impacting people. Okay! Enough of the PC crap and let's get this party going shall we?

Over my hiatus, I have been looking at some killer bands that many young'ns  may be overlooking. Well today is your lucky day because I want to feature one of the most incredible rock/musical monsters on the planet STYX! For my 35 and older readers,  you may find yourself recanting the words "Domo Origato Mr. Roboto", or drifting back to that hilarious moment of South Park where Cartman was singing "Come Sail Away". That is what makes them great! These are Kats who continue to fill arenas and kick up the jams to devout fans.

So who is STYX and why should you rush to your ticket master outlet and go to every show they have listed on their tour schedule. Well this dynamic group of musical masters is comprised of some of the greatest vocalist and musicians the world has ever known. You have the enigmatic genius of pianist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan, the vocals and monster guitar riffs of Tommy Shaw and James "J.Y" Young, the pounding bass walk-ups of Ricky Philips, and (my personal fave) the complex/fierce drumming patterns of drummer Todd Sucherman. Not only that, but you still get the amazing opportunity to see original bassist Chuck Panozzo kick up the jams with the band he co-founded back in 1972.

The band has endure their trials and tribulations over the years, but they continue to amaze audiences with their high-energy and phenomenal vocal harmonies in every song they perform. Older, wiser, and more invigorating with age, STYX continues to titillate the musical pallet of music lovers young and old, like a sweet wine that has a kick that brings you back for more. With the re-release of the bands DVD recording of "The Grand Illusion" (the album that catapulted the group to stardom), STYX quickly makes you see why they are masters of this musical fantasy.

In my personal opinion, STYX is truly one of the greatest musical resources presented to the Rock'n Roll world. So you may be asking yourself..."Why should I jump on the band wagon?" Well the answer is simple..."BECAUSE I SAID SO DANG IT!" That's why! Trust me you will love what you hear. STYX is music that is fun, nostalgic, relevant to everyone, and kicks you in the face with all it's rocking power. So get out and grab a copy of the band's DVD and any one of their albums and see what happens. Do it! "I DARE YOU!" I promise you won't be disappointed.

RADIOHEAD!!!!!!!!

"Ha-Ha!" Welcome back peeps.  Christmas kind of puts your brain in a constipated state, but I'm back baby and ready to give 2012 a killer "Chuck Norris" roundhouse in the nads. Are you ready? Can you feel it? Well if you can let’s get this thing started shall we?
So here is the skinny. The end of the year sucks in the music world in some ways, because it's focused on Christmas/Holiday compellations (not that there is anything wrong with that. Just saying), and the proverbial year review of all the artists, albums, and singles that rocked the universe...
...Okay look let's face it. If it had the name "Adele" on the front of it, it was the best thing to happen in 2011...
...Okay back to the...
..."Look I'm a little partial to the Brit style of music. I mean I've been watching BBC America every day since November and while on vacation in December. I mean honestly, "Top Gear" is the jam and I may have a slight crush on Gordon Ramsey...
...Okay that last bit was for shock value but I love how he chews people out and then gets all warm and fuzzy. Kinda bipolarish...
...Oh yeah! So that's why I'm all for Adele and stuff."...
...Back to the issue at hand. While I was sitting on "me bum" watching a ton of BBC, I was really struggling to find the "wow factor" of some new jams. There was really nothing going on other than Common's newest record. So I waited and waited and then it happened. Radiohead came out on December 19th and released two amazing singled that were recorded from their DVD "King of Limbs-From the Basement."

I mean what more could you ask for to get the juices flowing. These guys are amazing and I love the tracks. The two singles released entitled, "The Daily Mail" and "Staircase" which really demonstrate Radiohead’s diverse and emotional style. "The Daily Mail" reflects Yorke's interpretation of corruption and media hype and how it affects the public. His dark chord progression as he plays the piano brings you to a place where you relate and feel his discontent for what has become public news. The track is a very open reflection on how current struggles globally and within the U.K. effect the perception of the people and leave them disillusioned and voiceless.
"Staircase" again brings an interesting view on introspective thoughts and feelings, but is arranged in a way that you can't help but shake your head with insight and excitement, as the track careens through your ear-buds with a cool house-like groove. I mean who can talk about their loss and how they seek to regain all that they once had in a relationship that makes you want to get off your rump and sway just a little bit. OH WAIT I KNOW WHO...
...RADIOHEAD does that's who! To me, both of these tracks are phenomenal and would strongly encourage that you download them. The tracks along with the film can be accessed at www.radiohead.com or at your download music store retailer. If you want to get a glimpse of the tracks, be sure to hit up Spotify to sample them. If you haven't put Spotify on your list of things to do this New Year be sure to visit www.spotify.com for more details.
Lastly if you are a nerd like me and are the type or clown who wants to have the largest collection of DVD's and CD's, you can order Blu-Ray/DVD of "King of Limbs-From the Basement" directly from the bands store or wait to the end of January in which, copies will be available for purchase at your local retailers.

Common is Back

One of the most honest and thought provoking lyricists in Hip-hop is Common. Serving the Hip-Hop community as an ambassador of truth, mind provoking story telling, and a the soul that makes Hip-hop a staple in the music industry, Common's newest album, "The Dream, The Believer" brings a refreshing taste into a Hip-Hop genre that has been easily exploited, and reduced to foolishness centered on "phat" rims, bling, and ignorance.

"The Dream, The Believer" kicks off with amazing soulful samples that sets the pace in motion for a truly inspiring story that only Common can deliver. Common's passion for truth encourages  remarkable collaborations with iconic underground Hip-hop legends and Neo-soul masters such as, Nas, Maya Angelou, and John Legend to bring forth the voice of the urban community.

While I was listening to "The Dream, The Believer", I couldn't help but feel myself transported to a time where soulful music moved the masses into action and paved the way for change and progress. There is passion hope and inspiration that is presented in this album. A true push for progression and movement forward is what this album is all about. Common is quick to provide a clear picture of triumph over struggle and pain throughout life's many adversities. No matter what your primary musical choice is, "The Dream, The Believer" is an impacting and great album.

If you are following The Down Beat and are interested in some of the artists that are showcased, be sure to log-onto Spotify to obtain access to some really amazing new material of your favorite artists.

Classical Take on Some Modern Works.

So, the other day I was looking at my News Feed on Facebook, when I came across an interesting post displaying a parody of "Star Wars" theme music. Being the nerd that I am...

...I clicked on the video link and found myself transported to a place that I never in my wildest imagination thought I would see myself in.
The video was aptly titles "Cello Wars", and really showed some amazing musical creativity. The video displayed some cool production effects of this guy jamming on a cello playing a killer list of all the "Star Wars" themes backed by some cool techno loops. My eyes were transfixed on this little production and I became obsessed with learning more about this Classical Duo.
To my surprise, I was presented with the name ThePianoGuys, and was even more delighted to know that there were more modern interpretations of contemporary pop music done with a classical twist. This phenomenal duo is comprised of classical piano master Jon Schmidt, and a rocking Cellist, Steven Sharp Nelson. These two genius's approach to classical music with an edge is really worth taking a look at. As I continued to search for more information and videos on ThePianoGuys, I was presented with a killer modern interpretation of Mozart’s "Moonlight Sonata". The moment I heard, and saw this brilliant classical masterpiece revamped to a killer dubstep groove with a pianos and a "FREAKING CELLO", I lost it! I had to pick my jaw off the grown due to the incredible skill and sound that I was hearing.  It is in my opinion one of coolest things that I have discovered this year, and a great way to bring 2011 to a close.
ThePianoGuys have some singles available for download on iTunes and are in the process of completing their first LB displaying their mastery of classical music with a modern sound. If you find yourself as a excited as I was after watching this video, be sure to log onto http://www.thepianoguys.com/ to show your support.

It May Be a Good Time to Think Retirement Boys

After a dismal collaboration with Lue Reed, Metallica has released a 4 track Ep this morning on iTunes. This little piece is he Trash-Metal Bands way of attempting to redeem themselves for the flop of an album "Lu Lu.

"Beyond Magnetic is the title of the bands latest release, and I have to tell yah, "I'm not impressed." Dont get me wrong "Beyond Magnetic" is a step forward from this years past release, but I have to say that the guys are kinda coming off more like a stale fart that won't leave the room. "I mean what is the deal guys?" "After all you've done to Metal to make it cool, this is what we're left with?'

To me this is a sign that the boys may be in need of some serious creative interventions that will reinvigorate their heavy style that made Metallica legend. The band has been on an interesting plunge, since Lar's beef with Napster, and all their release after the famed self titled "Black Album". The metal monsters started making some strides with their two disc album "Garage Inc." featuring some killer covers, and their very euvongard classical fusion of their catalog "S&M". As time progressed-and unforeseen roster changes-Metallica has put nothing out that is remotely comparable to their early sound, which catapulted the band into Rock History.

This is a sad day in my opinion for Thrash-Metal. If you want to hear the latest EP check out Spotify for more details.

Cranberries Are on The Move

After ten years of no newly release material. Ireland's Celtic Alternative masters, the Cranberries are in the process of releasing their 6th studio album "Roses". The albums has released on single on iTunes called "Tomorrow" and if you visit the band's Facebook page you will be provided with an opportunity to download another track for free.

The band maintains their sound that has made them a true force within Alternative music. There is no doubt that there is a maturity in the groups song writing approach. The Cranberries continue to maintain the integrity of their Irish Culture making "Roses" a much anticipated release for 2012. Be sure to look for the band's new LP in February 2012.  If you are interested in t getting your hands of their two singles, hit up the iTunes Store and go to the band's Facebook page and select the "Free Download Tab". You can also obtain some samples of two other tracks by viewing The Cranberries webpage at, www.cranberries.com. Be sure to take some time to listen to them for your self.

Best Week of Music Thus Far!

Today was one of those days, that I must say arrived with much excitement. The new releases of some awesome material by artists Robin Thicke, The Roots, The Black Keys, and the late Amy Winehouse truly set my day in motion for some musical consumption that really made today AMAZING! So let us begin, shall we?

The first album on the list is Robin Thicke's fifth record, "Love After War". The first track on the album is really poppie and has a great head bobbing groove while maintaining that soulful style that has defined Robin as a true R&B sensation. His duo with Lil' Wayne on "Pretty Lil' Heart" is the first single on the album that wets fan's appetite for this new masterpiece. "Love After War" really offers a relevant message that is focused on hope and perseverance in the midst of hard times. There is no doubt that Robin maintains the integrity of soul music. I my opinion Robin Thicke is the modern day Marvin Gay, bringing raw emotion, sensuality, and magnificent metaphorical storytelling that set R&B in motion. This is a must have album, so do yourself the favor and get it. Moving on...

...While driving to work yesterday I was informed by one of West Palm's local radio personalities, that The Black Keys were releasing another album. With a Grammy under the duo's belt for their third album "Brothers", the Black Keys managed to bring a fuller sound to their increasing Alternative Rock approach to music. "El Camino" encompasses strong blue-grass and classic rock influences that clearly distinguish the groups very eclectic approach to song writing. You can hear the intense Zeppelin influence in "Little Black Submarine" to heavy Stevie Ray Blues guitar riffs throughout the albums entirety.  For me I wish nothing but further success for these guys and hope that "El Camino" brings another Grammy their way this year. Another must for your collection.

The Roots have another album? YES AND IT IS AWESOME! ?uestlove, Black Thought and the gang are back and bringing their uncanny musical approach to Hip-Hop in full motion with their new release "Undun". I don't know if it is the guys time on Jimmy Fallon or what, but The Roots are on a roll and doing it well. This album (like all the other Roots LP's) maintains the true story telling approach that Hip-Hop was intended to provide listener with. There is no question that The Roots continue to offer a breath of fresh air in music. "Undun" offers a great fusion of neo-soul and old-school hip-hop that will make you begging for more. Another must for you collection in my opinion.

Finally, we remember the late great Amy Winehouse. The idea that she is no longer with us due to her own inner demons silenced by her addiction, has left the music world a little short. Comprised of unreleased material, "Hidden Treasures" offers a very clear vision of the late singer's appreciation for Soul, Reggae, and old school jazz vocal styles of legends like Ella Fitzgerald and many more. With the help of Winehouse's family, "Hidden Treasures" offers greater insight to the artist's desire for hope, perseverance, and progress so needed in recovery/life. This is how Amy should be remembered.

Unlike past posts, these selections were bought outright. I knew they would be great, however if you are following "The Down Beat" and are interested in hearing these amazing albums before investing in them yourself, be sure to connect with Spotify to get a taste.

Deep Hip-Hop...

...I mean from the moment I hit the play button to the very end, "Watch The Throne" had me thinking. Hip-Hop giants, Jay-Z and Kanye West collaborated to bring forth one of the most amazing compilation within the Hip-Hop genre to date. This is what this Hip-hop was intended to sound like right from the beginning. "Watch The Throne" embodies the relevant story telling of legendary Hip-Hop groups such as Tribe Called Quest, and De-la Soul.

The intense provocativeness of this duo really get's you thinking of all the events that have impacted people over the course of these difficult times and how those who struggle can rise out of their difficult times. Jay-Z and Kanye really push the envelope with their opening track, "No Church In the Wild". The song challenges faith and theological concepts that bring about hope, and meaning. The two are quick to address how confrontation and chaotic existences, are easily masked with such beliefs simply masking certain unwanted truths while leading towards hypocrisy.

When I say that this is an intense album, I mean it. For the first time in a long time I am presented with a true piece of urban mastery. If you have not yet heard this album, be sure to hook-up with Spotify and get your taste of what I think is the best Hip-Hop album of the year.

Boy Bands Were Cool in the Mid 90's

So, just when you thought the boy band craze had vanished into mid air, some how they just keep popping up. The only difference is that they package them a little differently.

One such group is Pop-emo looking quartet Hot Chelle Rae. Long hair and tight fitting jeans are used to present a different package, but the reality is that they are just another boy band. Here is the thing...

...See I may come across critical, but I'm a musician and love hearing progression and evolution in music. This stuff is the same thing. The band's full length album "Whatever" is exactly what it is. It's teenie-pop centered on simple concepts. The most notable track on the album is "Tonight Tonight" which hit the Top-40 station several months back. The groups music is fun and will get you moving a bit. For me it is definitely lacking. If this is your sort of thing go for it. To me it's like listening to a Disney Channel Compilation of the Victorious Cast. I know you are asking yourself...
..."How does he know about the Victorious Cast?" Well I have a 3 year old niece and my roomie's little one loves the show too, so I'm around it more than I'd like to be.

The album is designed to capture the attention of a more younger audience, but has the potential of drawing in some grown-ups through the group's somewhat maturer content on some tracks.

If you are interested in listening to Hot Chelle Rae's album, be sure to check out Spotify and get an account. You can hear the guy's whole album along with many others.

"Sexy and I Know It!" Finally Someone Had Enough Sense to Write a Song About Me...

"Thanks LMFAO for really offering the world a glimpse of who I am.  I mean when I look at myself I like what I see. How about you? Okay don't get your panties in a bunch. I'm just having a little fun. LMFAO has made looking like a nerd and a complete idiot cool. There latest single "Sexy and I Know It" has been holding the number 2 spot on the Bill Board Digital Songs Chart for 12 weeks. These nuts must be doing something right.

There Dubstep Club Style really gets you excited. I mean look at the rock'n hamsters in that cool Kia commercial. I mean there couldn't have been a more amazing promotional use of a song than, seeing a bunch of rodents dressed in street gear jamm'n to "Party Rock Anthem". It was that cool, I met one of the hamsters at a bar here in West Palm on Halloween. You should have seen how he shaked his little nub of a tail. All kidding aside this is a fun album with an over emphasis on Rock'n stuff.

If Eminem is The Jedi Master Yoda, and Yelawolf Was My Pupil, I'd be Pissed...

Look, I'm not a hater of Hip-hop. In fact I like it, but I'm not that nuts about a lot of the commercial stuff that is out there. I mean how many times can you write tracks about whoe's, bling, picking up whoe's at clubs, big booties, and fake grills. Isn't there more to that style of music than just that? Honestly!

That brings us to the latest creation of that Eminem's tutelage Yelawolf. Now before I commence with my review of his debut album "Radioactive"-which was produced by none other than Slim Shandy-I need to give you a little more background. Not on Yelawolf, just how I got the album.

So I was at Tar-gzey (that's the cool was of saying Target) and was combing through their CD section when I came across "Radioactive" for $10. Now amidst my moment of impulsivity, I stopped myself and thought...
..."I can listen to this new album on Spotify to see if I like it before I buy it." DUH! So here I am now previewing this new little album of the supposed next White Rapper Superstar. Hmmmmmmmmmmm...
...Look I don't doubt that the guy is talented in some way, and I think that it's really cute that Slim took on a big brother role and helped this kat break out, but the truth of the issue is that this album is really the same old rhymes that really make me not like a lot of commercial hip-hop.

The first half of the record is like a like a Dirty South super reunion. I mean really! Dirty South was the worst thing to happen to the hip-hop movement. The same fast pace beat free of cool samples (provided you have legal permission to use the sampled track :) ) and some lame, lame lyrics. I mean if this kid was to be the next big thing, I have to say that I'm not really impressed. For me the best song on the album was "Hardest Love Song in The World". That track had a cool guitar riff looped throughout, and really gave a cool authentic Hip-Hop sound. Clearly there was no expense spared in hyping this album with celebrity. "Radioactive" features rhymes by Kid Rock, Lil John, and Eminem himself.

If there was a rating scale on my blog I would provide Yelawolf's breakout album with 3 stars. It's really not all that great. If there is something that I'm missing in this whole thing, please let me know. I'm willing to learn. Thanks again and if you haven't yet, check out Spotify.com to set up an account and sample new releases of all your favorite and undiscovered artists.

Adele Live at the Royal Albert Hall

When I found out that they were planning on making a DVD recording of this show, November 29th, 2011 could not come any faster. I was quick to venture off to my nearest Best Buy on my lunch break and grab a copy. Once I reviewed the packaging I was even more thrilled to learn that my cool "Blu-ray" version of the concert came with a CD recording of the concert itself. "HOLY CRAP!"
Okay so let's get serious, shall we? This concert experience was something to behold. The Royal Albert Hall is the crème-de-la-crème of venues in the UK. It is a historic site that has housed the musical genius if legends and pit's pretty posh. As usual, Adele drops you on your butt the minute she opens her mouth and you hear the power of her magnificent voice. To me she is the modern day reincarnation of R&B Divas, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin. Her music connects with you in a way that so few performers are able to do in today’s fast paste music market.
The show offers listeners and viewers a delightful assortment of Adele’s two albums ("19" and "21"). Her brilliant performance of "Someone Like You" is highly emotional for not only Adele herself, but for all those listening in attendance at Albert Hall and at home. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! If there is anything to criticize is the fact that there was a lot more banter in between songs than there should have been, however, Adele's commentary provides you with a closer look at the roots of her lyrical content for her music. Not only that but, you really get to enjoy her "cheeky" quips and personality that make her such a loveable person.

If you have not seen this show I would strongly recommend that you do so. Make it a "Block Buster Night", grab your friend, loved ones, and some wine and lose yourself in the angelic vocals of one of today's brightest stars.

Why is Mute Math so Awesome?...

...Because they just are! The band's latest (and for me, much anticipated) album brings a true refreshing sound for those who love bands that continue to evolve with their age. "Odd Soul" is the latest installment of the New Orleans band's eclectic pop sound approach to synth-rock. After a very personally combative writing process for Mute Math's second album "Armistice"-which earned the group critical acclaim in 2009-the once quartet, nor trio embarked on their first self produced album that provides their listeners with a more personal in depth look at the band's inner thoughts.

"Despite the fact that many of the songs on Odd Soul—such as the garage-inflected title track—will inevitably make bodies move, the album simultaneously addresses some deeper themes hovering around all of the head nodding. “The lyrical idea of this record is loosely based on our upbringing in what I guess you could call eccentric Christianity,” Meany explains, adding that this is also the first album where Meany and King fully collaborated on lyrics. “We wanted to address a lot of the stories we’ve gathered over the years in what is an admittedly odd culture,” he continues. “And not only that, it’s our culture, and we know it well… I think writing this record certainly gave us a new appreciation for it, and it gave us a chance to be much more up front about ourselves (retrieved from http://mutemath.com/about/ on November 28, 2011).” This personal style of writing was an indicative function in leading to the albums title "Odd Soul". The lyrical concept of the album is to present ideas that heighten the awareness of many of the awkward ideas and feelings individuals perceive and process in their life journeys.

"Odd Soul" is great album for everyone. If you haven't heard any of Mute Math's music before, this is certainly a great way to introduce yourself to some real head bobbin', mature music. "GET IT!"

Black Friday+Cyber Monday=Christmas Jams Are on The Move

As promised, this post looks at the tunes that keep us all in the Christmas spirit. Well for some of us that is. Within this review there a couple of artists that make me think more of the toilet than anything else. So let us begin shall we.

Let's kick this thing off with a newly pop monster's attempt at bringing forth some Yul-tie cheer. I present to you none other than Justin Bieber's Holiday album "Under The Mistletoe". Now if there are a couple of Biebernites (or whatever they call you cult followers) let me just tell you that this album is pure CRAP! There is nothing cool about taking some classic Christmas tunes and making them poppie. The album is predictable and lame. Not only that, I really tried to give the kid the benefit of the doubt but his voice made me want to hurl. "Sorry!" There I said it. In my opinion this record is only for the prepubescent teenie boppers who are praying for Santa to leave them a Bieber clone under the tree.

Our next album, and one of my faves, is an amazing interpretation of classic Holiday songs that really get's you in the mood. Three time Grammy Nominated Artist, Kim Hill brings a mature and balanced presentation of some memorable songs that just make you want to cozy up by the fire with your "Boo" and enjoy some hot coco. Hill's album "Christmas Back to You" offers a pleasant fusion of jazz, country, and some smooth rock that will really get you reflecting on what Christmas is all about. The album also provides a colaboration between Kim and her Son, Ben who bring a very interesting interpretation to a timeless Christmas classic. In all this is one of my favorites for this year.

He's known as the "Bube" in short by some of his friend, but the rest of us know him as Michael Buble. Buble maintains his smooth jazz style approach to music that brings his listeners back to a time where Dean Martin and the Rat Pack ruled the media airwaves. Buble's album, "Christmas" does nothing, but speak for itself. Listening to this album takes you back to a time where big band was the in thing, and Jazz set the foundation for style that remains classy, charismatic, and the foundation for everything modern in music. The album contains some fun duets with Shaina Twain and Latin Artist, Thalia. Michael Buble's "Christmas" is a must have in my opinion.

Our next Christmas album comes from the cute little voice of Zoey Dechanel in her duo group She & Him. The duo's Holiday album is entitled "A Very She & Him Christmas", which offers a very laid back jazzy feel to timeless Christmas jams. The two do a magnificent job of keeping all of the songs true to form and tradition. There is no question that this album will catapult you into the Christmas spirit. You will love how She & Him stick to the integrity of what these songs are all about. Another great holiday album to add to your collection.

These are a couple of albums that I have selected that I think are fun. Well all except the Bieber one. I really tried to get into it, but I couldn't. There was no possible way for me to enjoy it no matter how hard I tried. That being said, I hope that you enjoy this post and if you haven't checked out Spotify and listened to these, and many other artists, I strongly suggest that you do. Spotify is a great way to preview your faves new material before investing in it. If you like what you hear, show you support and buy it. Thanks again and be on the look out for more posts.

Local Love for South Florida Band

So if you were in the Jupiter, Florida area and needed a break from the Black Friday madness last night, I hope you had a chance to sit in on String Theory's set at the Square Grouper. This amazing four piece offers you a killer list of modern and classic covers that will really get you moving.

Shane, D-Man, Mark and Bruce kicked off the night with a little Steve Miller Band and managed to get the crowd a little hot under the mattress with their cover of King's of Leon's "Sex on Fire". In all String Theory's energy was high and really engaging with their fans. If you are in the market for a professional group of guys that would offer your event a real eclectic variety of music, then String Theory is your band. You can find them at www.stringtheoryband.com, and get in contact with Shane Bushman for booking. Be sure to check out their schedule online and if you are close by stop in, enjoy, and support some of South Florida's local talent.

Nickelback! The Other Canadian Band

Nickelback's last album "Dark Horse" brought the Canadian band down to a more simpler sound, thanks producer Mutt Lang. Now, I'm not a hardcore fan of the group but I must say that I really enjoyed "Dark Horse". When I learned that the band was releasing another album I was kind of excited.

Now I know the guys have been dubbed as one of the cheesiest band lyrically along with a variety of other criticisms that at times seemed a bit unfair, but truth is they must be doing something right. That being said this review is pertaining to the band's latest project entitled "Here and Now". This album maintains a bit of the sound and musical approaches that were developed in "Dark Horse", however there are some "Eh" moments that made me feel a bit awkward when listening to the album. My least favorite track on the record is "When We All Stand Together. To me this song was like a poor interpretation of Chumbawuma, Men at Work, and Toto "On crack"! The arrangement is really lame and goofy lyrically. It was just dumb. The rest of the album consists of fun topics centered around boozing and finding some hot stripper that is willing to give you a good time provided you pay for it. "Real original boys!" Now I'm not saying that I hate this album, but I can't with good conscience give it anything higher than a 3 out of 5 stars. If you like this Canadian Rock Troop go for it, but you can't say that I didn't warn you.

If you want to hear the album in its entirety before investing in it, check out Spotify.com and sign up for a membership. This is one of my chief resources for finding new stuff and letting you know my thoughts on new releases. Enjoy the rest of your Turkey Day vacation and be on the look out for My Christmas Album picks.

Hippies Still Fighting "The Man"

So I was sitting in my office again listening to some jams on Spotify, and I came across this interesting album that was a cross between Jim Croce and a barber shop quartet that probably was kicked out of every shop because the failed to learn one vital skill...
..."HOW TO SING!" Now despite the interesting vocals (that were an interpretation of Marlboro Menthol Folk Vocals) I couldn't stop listening to it.

You may be asking, "Who is this band and why did you keep listening?" Well the answer to those questions are simple. The band is called Dad Rocks and the album is called "Mount Modern".

Now this album takes and interesting critique on current sociological issues that are effecting American Culture. Dad Rocks focuses on unemployment to how social media drives self esteem in the toilet. Despite the interesting vocals, this album was worth the listen and fun. Dad Rocks comedic satire of how stupid and lazy people really are was really on point. If you are into Folk Music and willing to endure the political satire, "Mount Modern" is worth a listen.
